We're pretty sure our Golden Girl Dorothy is the daughter of Great Pyrenees Sophia, so even though she doesn't look a lot like a Pyr, we're listing that as her first breed. Dorothy looks more like a SMALL Yellow Lab, so we're listing that second. Her EYES look more like an Anatolian Shepherd or Akbash dog, and since she was living with free-range chickens and not bothering them at all, maybe that's a more likely possibility. But it's really just a guessing game. As we get to know Dorothy better, we may adjust our thinking about her breed mix based on her temperament. But for now, "Pyrador" is our best guess.

When she was surrendered to rescue, it was clear that Dorothy had recently had puppies. But those puppies were not surrendered to us. PLEASE NOTE: There are some photos that show Dorothy with young puppies. These are NOT her puppies. We believe they are her siblings, from a different litter born to Great Pyrenees Sophia, whom we believe to be Dorothy's mom.

Based on her brilliant white teeth, which show very little wear, we think that Dorothy probably got pregnant during her first heat cycle and had puppies before ever reaching her first birthday. In our experience, when that happens, the dog never grows as big as she might otherwise have done, because her body put all of her growth into the puppies instead of into HER, at a critical time in her development. So we don't think Dorothy will get much bigger than she currently is.

Dorothy is very friendly on meeting new people. But she is a little fearful on meeting new dogs.  As long as the dogs are nice and give her a little space, she accepts them pretty quickly.  Of course, here at Windsong Ranch, she is getting the opportunity to meet a LOT of dogs, so hopefully she is learning that new dogs aren't so scary after all.

Even though we believe she has lived outside her whole life, Dorothy is learning that living in the house is GOOD. She seeks out the crate when she gets a little overwhelmed by the number of dogs here at Windsong Ranch. The first time we tried to close the crate door, she panicked and tore up the crate enough to get out. And yet she still goes into that same crate -- we just can't close it because she destroyed the part where the latches are.  In the bedroom, she goes into the crate at night, and she's beginning to learn that it's OK for us to latch the crate. She has only slept one full night in the crate so far, but she has only been here for a week, so we're content with her progress.

Dorothy is scheduled for spay surgery soon, so she should be ready for adoption mid-July.  You can apply now at https://www.bluebonnetrescue.org/info/adoption.
